OpSIS Silicon Photonics

Sub-System Design workshop

This workshop will introduce you to Silicon Photonics and Optoelectronic Systems Integration in Silicon (OpSIS) – truly a breakthrough that holds huge promise for fabricating complex systems with affordable and reliable computer chips, allowing the movement of information using light as well as electricity. This workshop will be an in-depth, hands-on introduction to photonics design using OpSIS design kits. The objective is to train people to the point where they're able to do independent designs of photonic circuits, and interact successfully with OpSIS to build their own chips using the OpSIS-IME process. Workshop case-study: We will design an optical link consisting two chips, each being an 8 channel WDM transmitter/receiver using ring modulators, grating/edge couplers, Ge detectors, ring demultiplexers (or CDCs), and an external comb laser or a laser array. Thermal tuning will be used in transmit and receive ring resonators. The system will target 10-20 Gb/s modulation.
