“Clean Technology” refers to a diverse range of products, services, and processes that harness renewable materials and energy sources, dramatically reduce the use of natural resources, and cut or eliminate emissions and wastes.” This course covers the technical fundamentals, most recent trends, and challenges in renewable energy, smart grid, energy storage, green building and green transportation. This course will give an overview of the seven kinds of renewable energy: solar, wind, bio, hydro, wave, tidal and geothermal energy. Smart grid topics include smart meters, sensors and appliances on the user side, as well as distributed generation (DG), microgrids, and distributed resources (DER) used in managing the new energy sources. Energy storage represents a major technological challenge in the energy industry. The course covers current and emerging technologies in storage including lithium ion batteries, pumped hydro, molten salt, compressed air and nanotechnology applications. Green building addresses the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards for sustainable construction and new LED (Light Emitting Diode) illumination technologies and building integrated photovoltaics. Finally green transportation will cover electric vehicles , hybrids and high speed rail. The main topics to be covered are:
